Safety Application Example
Machine Press Guarding Example A
Point-of-operation guarding of the
opening to a high-tonnage press
Description: In this example, the angled sensor approach to satisfying setback
requirements saves installed system component and wiring costs. A possible
drawback is the larger area occupied by the sensors, as compared to the dual
sensor (See Example B)
Guarding: Installing simply a vertical light curtain to meet setback requirements
would create a space between the vertical light curtain and the press which
would be wide enough for an operator to stand inside and undetected by the
vertical light screen. However, by mounting a MINI-SCREEN sensor pair at an
angle, the required screeningand setback are achieved.
This application example depicts only
generalized guarding and should not be automatically treated as a solution for
any particular situation. Every guarding application has a unique set of safety
requirements which must be carefully examined. Extreme care is urged to ensure
that all safety and legal requirements are met and that all installation
instructions are followed.
In addition, any questions regarding safeguarding should be directed to the
factory’s own Safety Department or Safety Officer. No responsibility will be
taken for use of these examples which are only guidelines to the types of
